Staff members involved: abadbird, Lafcadio

Nyxartstation was brought to staff attention as part of a batch of artists that abadbird considered suspicious, drawing attention to a flag by an unaffiliated artist. On the same day, Lafcadio ran some simple tests against the work of the batch of artists that abadbird brought up. Of the artists besides Nyxartstation, both were subject to partial deletions. After reviewing the artist's e621 gallery, Lafcadio checked their Newgrounds portfolio and saw a number of additional, highly suspicious posts portraying various anime characters, and decided then and there to start processing deletions.

Around 90 minutes later, the artist began to conduct an appeal via Discord. Versperus commented about having received a DMail from them first.

They first started by complaining that the treatment of their posts had changed after roughly two years of nothing. Lafcadio explained that a rereview was prompted after the discovery of various technical and stylistic tells.

They replied with an anecdote about speaking to Whygena, providing a series of sketches, references, and sites: Whygena's apology and statement are viewable at https://x.com/Whygena_Draws/status/1833702009767370910.

In response, Lafcadio noted that an artist vouching for them is not good enough, believing that Whygena simply would've been mislead at the time.

Nyxartstation stated accusations of this nature were a "recurring incident", offering screen recordings, physical drawings, etc.; Already aware of previous Twitter and Pixiv deletions by this artist, Lafcadio decided to take advantage and see what kind of process NyxArt would use that could potentially enable them to record unredacted video without reference material immediately available.

6 days later, a 5-hour video was submitted including discrepancies that showed the existence of a second monitor. As it was 2 AM local time for Lafcadio, he was unable to review it until the following morning. Upon doing so, Lafcadio noted discrepancies showing the use of a second display. This was what enabled them to show Whygena a plausible-looking process, Lafcadio reasoned.

Lafcadio asked: "In the interest of establishing a timeline, is there any artistic history we should know about prior to your first uploads under this name on February 2024?"

The artist posted a selection of 10 pencil drawings on paper, and proceeded to preemptively explain various changes in style, telling anecdotes about needing to save screenshots instead of being able to save directly from the freeware Clip Studio Paint, and then slowly learned the tools including Shading Assist, the 3D models, etc.; they confided that "i stopped drawing people in a sense since it was just too difficult to me and i got really used to drawing furies". They called back to prior conversation with Whygena again, saying "i have great hand eye coordination so i really only need the character themsleves which i usually find of Pinterest and the pose which i find on Pinterest or for nsfw i go to another site for, and depending on the image i find i try to replicate that character in the style i see which is why purr 03 looks the way she is since i took reference from my own piece of her seeing there isn't much art of her out there".

They discussed starting drawing proper "around 2017" during schooling, swapping to digital starting from "about 2022 to 23".

They explained away constant style changes as "you actively watching me learn how to draw and use the program to its best ability from shortcuts to the thousands of materials i either downloaded or bought off csp themselves for a coarse of years, i found out what i did best which were furies and decided to stick to that for my period".

Lafcadio laid a bit of bait: "Speaking of style changing, is style mimicry an interest of yours?"

The artist replied: "not entirely i have my own style but if i cant draw the character in my own style then i tend to lean more into mimicry in a sort as you can see when i drew diives character or oopsynsfws characters i drew them in the artist style seeing i couldn't figure out the proportions in my own style"

From there, Lafcadio posted a lengthy explanation where he accused the artist of the use of over 50 different LoRAs ("low-rank adaptations", small-sized models that can be used to seamlessly insert new characters and concepts into existing checkpoints), pointing out how the dates and availability of character materials unfailingly aligned, causing the artist to draw a certain selection of characters on-style because alternatives did not exist. He additionally noted a few issues related to the mere practice of using models such as Pony Diffusion.

In response, the artist angrily replied, calling the entire appeal completely pointless, accusing Lafcadio of jealousy, "pulling shit out your ass", hyper-focusing on mistakes, etc., and otherwise completely ignoring the nature of Lafcadio's final accusation.

Having no more to gain from the exchange, Lafcadio closed the appeal, and the artist voluntarily left the Discord server.
