March 8 is International Women's Day, commemorating womens' fight for equality and liberation. Various labor movements in the early 20th century celebrated their own Women's Days but the current version wasn't created until Vladimir Lenin's declared it in 1922 to celebrate women's contributions to the 1917 Russian Revolution. Socialist movements and communist countries celebrated it since, and the United Nations promotes it every year since 1977, usually with a particular theme, campaign, or issue.
