Small mischievous creatures that live inside machinery, often in aircraft, and cause various malfunctions. Their origin can be traced back all the way to the early 20th century at the dawn aviation. There's no universally accepted physical appearance for these critters. Most depictions of them in pop culture are either impish or goblinoid in anatomy. Behaviorally they are often depicted as being mischievous and tend to have the insatiable urge to tinker with machines, regardless of the consequences. One of the most popular depictions of them is in the Gremlins franchise.

As a slang being called a "gremlin" implies that you have qualities of said creature such as being mischievous, hyperactive, a troublemaker, and small.
