Invalid: vine snake

Multiple unrelated species are called "vine snake" - please choose one of the following instead:

  • american_vine_snake - genus Oxybelis, identifiable by their narrow, upturned snouts and large, round pupils. Includes the green_vine_snake and the brown_vine_snake.
  • asian_vine_snake - genus Ahaetulla, identifiable by their narrow, horizontal, often keyhole or chevron-shaped pupils. Usually found with alternating light and dark "dash" markings across the body. Snout is not significantly upturned like in Oxybelis. Can be found in many colors, including blue and bright yellow, though green is the most common. Green individuals are often confused with the green_vine_snake, but are unrelated. Includes a large number of highly visually similar species.
  • hispaniolan_vine_snake, genus Uromacer, which includes three species, all of which are green. Identifiable by a shorter and rounder snout, except in the case of the sharp-nosed_hispaniolan_vine_snake, which is almost indistinguishable from the green_vine_snake except that the snout is not upturned, and the torso not quite as laterally compressed.

The visual similarities across these unrelated genera is an example of convergent evolution.
