Terminology

In English, the word drone is most commonly associated with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which saw widespread and increasing popularity during the early 21st century. UAVs have been adopted for military use, scientific research, commercial delivery, aerial photography, and private recreation, among other uses.

Drones are typically categorized depending on what environment that they traverse in.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) - Flying drones from rotary, rocket propelled, to fixed winged ones.
  • Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) - Land based drones that uses wheels, tracks, or even legs.
  • Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) - Also known as a "drone ship", drones that float on water.

Not to be confused with

  • Drone - The fetish involving hypnosis and bondage gear.
  • Robot - Drones still need to be piloted or driven remotely by someone or tethered to a master/command unit to operate effectively. Robots can perform tasks and make decisions on their own on the field without much direct intervention.
